June 2010

'Hold me close, under the sunset and let God's reds and oranges soothe your eyes, like this is all a dream.'

Review - Saturday, June 5, 2010 by Gary Krajewski

Perhaps the best way to understand the power of the June 2010 concept is through a song like the delicate walkings on "The Scientist", or the addictive sustain peddle on "Real World", or the very touching and cleansing "Warning Sign". Because it is through these kinds of songs that the performers are able to see what was their lives---and what was their concert lives---years after it was initially experienced. And on such an ethereal stage such as this month, to hear and see these songs being performed on their last spins of concert airplay, is a very, almost reincarnated, experience. "Tracy Jacks" provides such an experience as well, as we remember those fond sunny days in Fall 2006 that thankfully erased the rainy, cool climates of spring and summer of that year. "Hold Me Now" is a cry waiting to happen the entire play through, and a song that has been renaissanced from the depths of 2005. Andy also didn't forget to throw in some growing-up classics. "Touch Of Grey" is a song that was barely understood in the living rooms of the twins' childhood upbringing, but at the tender age of 26, it comes full circle. "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" tells a particularly picturesque tale of burning desire, and romantic expenditure. "Little By Little", another in-betweener of 2006, that has been brought back at just about the right time, and its hazy, honest appeal is both touching and realistic at the same time. And his closer, the aforementioned "Scientist" is a song that allows itself to be taken in many different lights, and directions, but is clearly of the tale of a journey, any journey, and the fact that not any one journey is easier than another.

Gary has had three concerts consisting of almost all progressive/art rock. He has found music that has come to him, and music that is delicate enough, yet accessible enough, to fit into the June 2010 idea. Starting with a classic of note, David Bowie's "It's No Game", was his October 2009 opening night starter, a very strange song, that borders on glam rock. "Little Hands" by Freudiana revives the 1968 days of The Beatles, and ends up being a catchy art-pop flyer. "I Can't Dance", with it's comical beat and many different percussions, was a nice break from the serious tone of most of his songs. Right at the end of this concert, two songs made immediate impact. Alan Parsons' "Old and Wise" has powerful verse lines, with  "Tell Me" is a breathtaking, shivering affair by Camel that has one of those precious, infinite melodies. The low clarinet and flute are gorgeous and sorrowful, particularly on the bridge. Gary has found a very special song here, a song that he ranks in his Top 10---ever. Gary hasn't just found timeless music---he has clearly established himself as a prog/art-rock guru of sorts, here in June.

Performer Song Comments
Andy Matchbox 20 -Real World This is a HUGE surprise! OMG! That was AWESOME that Sunday afternoon Matchbox 20 tribute in March. I can listen to this Sustain riff ALL DAY LONG! THIS WAS AWESOME! IT LOOKS LIKE A CONCERT DOWN HERE! GREAT PERFORMANCE!
Gary David Bowie - It's No Game This will forever be linked to the first Halloween concert we did in 2009, wow was that ELECTRIC. But you know what??? This ACTUALLY tops it with the lighting and smog down here. The vocals are SO SO SO demented and weird. The bassy beat is FANTASTIC! Almost sounds like a McCartney bass line. Folks: this is basement music right here.
Andy Blur - Tracy Jacks This actually brings back really good memories from a really great season: Fall 2006. I thought it was a really bright Renaissance from a dismal Spring and Summer 2006. This song was part of that movement. I remember trying this on guitar back then. It's a B! I love the Beach Boys ohhhhs. This is a TIGHT SONG. Crisp snare! I like the "overrated" line! I cannot tell you how wonderful a second song this made. AWESOME
Gary Supertramp - Dreamer Is this Freddie Fender??!? I love that keyboard line here, it's quite classic rockish, almsot Queenish. There is some dreamy stuff going on in this and the lyrics are really awesome. Again that keyboard is awesome. This would be an EXCELLENT song to listen to right before bed or in the car. Excellent stuff here.
Andy Wayne Wonder - Hold Me Now I remember this on May 1st. Holy shit. The singing in this is OUTSTANDING. This is a diamond in the rough if I ever heard it. This is an EXCELLENT SUMMER SONG. The lyrics are pretty touchy feely in the romance department. This almost has a reggae APPROACH. This is a song that should be there throughout the summer.
Gary Pink Floyd - High Tide (Cymbaline) Props for you for proving that Pink Floyd were far better and more diverse than Dark Side of the Moon. Although I do love some songs on there. This has a nice production to it, it almost sounds forboding- like something's coming. Again you can hear the Beatles influence here, though you could argue it sounds more modern at times than the Beatles usually sound. The lyrics in this point to nonobvious topics, but you get the feeling of dread in it. Excellent stuff.
Andy Grateful Dead - Touch Of Grey Jerry Garcia has alot of grit! LOL and also alot of hard earned respect. This is a CLASSIC FIRST SONG off that album. Slightly psyc, slightly folk, slightly classic rock, they had their own style. The solo is excellent. GOOD production. Scary vocals on the chorus lol. But their lyrics are underratetly SMART and witty. SMOOTH SMOOTH SOLO! Some politics on the last verse? LOL. VERY melodic as well. It's really neat to realize that we used to LISTEN to this stuff and grew UP on such sustanence.
Gary Brian Eno - I'll Come Running I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS?!?!? I was trying to get into him in 2008. This is actually a lot better than what stuff of his I was getting into. In fact it's HEAPS better. Brian Eno is, as you probably found out, is a very famous producer. He actually produced Coldplay's last album. The lyrics in parts here are both sinister and strangely enticing. The production is SUPERB. This is some wonderful stuff here and one of your catchiest songs this June.
Andy The Smiths - There Is a Light That Never Goes Out I actually do NOT like the Anberlin cover of this. They didn't nail the hooks quite right. I LOVE the "take me anywhere I don't care I don't care"....the HEIGHT of naturalism. The chorus is mad catchy. The "take me out"s are CLASSIC and totally Friday night passages. There are some very specific lyrics in this. "Light that never goes out" = unconditional love. Actually, this song is about a flame that never really evaporated.
Gary Freudiana - Little Hands WOW Beatles anyone? Cool/weird band name. Why does this sound familiar, like the vocals. The vocals sound like Elliott Smith. This is a tight, sweet little song with plenty of throwback. Also quite catchy, like your last one. Shall we hear more from them??
Andy Oasis - Little by Little Another one that really brings back those really nice days of Fall 2006. I like the lead in to the chorus, mega catchy. Noel's got this great little hazy delay going on with his mic and it's phat. The solo is straight haze. I just like the rustic feeling in this song...it's an excellent sunset song. The chorus really might be his catchiest, and straight-forward. This is LESS Britpop, and MORE Alternative rock.
Gary Camel - Metrognome There some lighting up some weed in the intro verse, LOL. This has a very melty, almost 80s ballad feel to it. I like the "watery" sound in this, it's cool. The jazzy textures in this are warming and engaging. Musicianship is fantastic and so is the creativity.
Andy Coldplay - Warning Sign *GULP*. I just kind of stared into space during this. This is about making a mistake at missing something that should have or could have been truly special and GOOD for you, but because of undefined or personal issues, perhaps you passed it by....at the TIME thinking that it was NOT a good thing. After the smoke clears, you realize it WAS....................
Gary Alan Parsons - Old and Wise LOL funny ass title. There are some EXCELLENT VOCALS in this!!!! Do the lyrics point to suicide or death? It makes you wonder. This is the best song I've heard from them. Wow this is a DELICIOUS song lyrically, god.
Andy Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - (Are You) The One That I've Been Waiting For? This is a GREAT LINE, GREAT CHORUS. He sounds like Jeremy Camp (a good thing). He has that sort of rough and low voice. This is a sizeable hook!
Gary Camel - Breathless This one is perhaps even MORE elegant than their others. The vocals carry a definite accent and are crisp, clear, and memorable. This is almost oporaic. Sneakily delicious guitar, keyboard, and drumming. It all adds up to quite a beautiful sound, really, it's great. The vocals especially.
Andy Oasis - Half the World Away This has a pattering beat, almost folk, almost jangle-pop. The vocals are VERY clear and VERY crisp. The Beatles are heavy influenced here. The chorus line is catchy. I could pick up on it quickly when the song came in. Pretty positive message. This is a pleasant late concert song!
Gary Camel - Rainbow's End The spacey textures in this only add to the music. It's a good asset. The vocals are whimsical and misty. This sound like a good ender-type song like their last one. I love the orchestration, it's quite lovely actually. The lyrics are very sad- not depressing- just sad. Great tune.
Andy Amy Grant - Cry a River Ouchies on the first few lines. LOL. Is this similar to the classic song "Cry Me A River"? lol. Amy has a very mature, very polished voice. She also has very polished lyricism. She is a romantic - MINUS the hopeless part...she writes mature songs about strength and faith in love...NOT loss and separation. This is a particularly folky/James Taylor-ish approach for her, both lyrically and sound.
Gary Genesis - I Can't Dance LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is GREAT!!!! Biggest surprise on your side tonight. DEFINITELY. The guitar is FUN and cool. This was one of the biggest surprises of 2010.
Andy Coldplay - The Scientist You have always had a special thing for this song...I don't think it has their GREATEST melodicy in it, but the lyrics and vocals are HUMONGOUS! This is a song about the fact that it IS a difficult path in ANY JOURNEY...no matter HOW "simple" it may SEEM to the naked eye...the journey is long and the journey is never easy. I remember this being played in 2007 and I would love it. This was classic. GOOD HARMONIES. Chris Martin is one of the greatest human being influences to ever make his mark on concerts. This was amazing.
Gary Camel - Tell Me This wastes no time in getting dark and SAD!!!! Wow. One note, I really liked your description of The Scientist. I never thought of it that way!!! OMG, this is a TEARJERKER...SHIT!!! It's not depressing, just sterile and SAD!!!! This is a goodbye song if I ever heard one..wow.....STUNNING STUNNING ender.
